Upcoming Fork - Bitcoin.com IOS App

Thu Jul 27, 2017 7:20 pm

I pulled my coins out of coinbase.com ahead of the upcoming Bitcoing Cash fork, and I cant seem to find out for sure if the wallet i chose (Bitcoin.com IOS version) gives me control over my private keys or not.

Can anyone confirm if that's the case? Should I switch to Jaxx or something else?

Your Bitcoin.com wallet on your phone has your private key(s).

The 12 word phrase you wrote down when creating the wallet will generate your private key should you ever lose your phone. You did write it down, didn't you?

If you have no coins in the iOS wallet to begin with, then you can uninstall the app, restart the phone, and download and install it again. As GreyWyvern said, be careful to note your seed - a sequence of 12 words which must be in order to recover your wallet on the iOS device.

If you didn't write down and save the seed, you can transfer your coins temporarily to a wallet on a laptop or similar, just download the bitcoin.com wallet software for desktop. Send the coins there, then reinstall your iOS wallet software, and send the coins back to that wallet. If you really want them on your iOS device.

Thanks for this - i did in fact write this down. Does this allow me to actually access and view my private key somehow or just recover the wallet if the phone is lost?

As an example, now that Bitcoin has split and there is now Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash - If i want to send the Bitcoin cash to an exchange, how do I get access to the private keys so i can send my bitcoin cash somewhere and retain my bitcoin in my wallet?

Thanks

Yes, but also even if your phone isn't lost, which is why it's very important to keep the phrase safe, just like you would do if you were storing real physical cash. Anyone with the phrase can generate your private key and make off with your Bitcoin.
As an example, now that Bitcoin has split and there is now Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash - If i want to send the Bitcoin cash to an exchange, how do I get access to the private keys so i can send my bitcoin cash somewhere and retain my bitcoin in my wallet?
Bitcoin Cash shares the same parent chain as Bitcoin, which means that 100% of pre-fork private keys for one chain will also work for the other! So you already have your private key for your BCH. You should be able to use your passphrase with any trustworthy BCH-compatible wallet to gain access to your BCH coins. Or just wait until the wallet you're currently using does an update and adds support.

Jaxx? Didn't they also have some security incidents? Why not use a hardware wallet instead?
We don't need no centralisation. ImageImageImage
