New User: Keepkey - Missing BTC Help Pls

Thu Mar 02, 2017 7:36 am

Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to this so if someone can tell me what I did wrong, that would be appreciated.

I jumped on the bitcoin train about 1.5 months ago. I've been purchasing a little bit at a time. I picked up a keepkey and have been sending BTC to it with no problem. I decided I wanted to remove 0.2 BTC from KeepKey. I carried out the transaction as intended.. That is 0.2 BTC with a .000454 Network Fee.

Under my KeepKey Transaction tab I see:

Address: 1KBu9rnJrUHEUBpUwPe3HTur5hXTkceQ9F
Amount: -0.2
Network Fee: -0.000454

Well.. My wallet is now .6 bitcoin less! KeepKey shows exactly .6 bitcoin less then my original amount!

Under my KeepKey Transaction - Next to the transaction that was carried out is a "DETAILS" link.. I clicked on the link and I'm brought to the following Bitcoin Transaction:

71574c563c4a77f99f485323c7c33c30c57243768e43f751266386fbc28251fd

Shows .6 BTC removed. .2 BTC went to the intended location. The other .4 I have absolutely no idea.

any help to understand where .4 BTC would be greatly appreciated. Is there any way I can get this back?

It's probably nothing... I assume 1DNDzF8icnrmtqpVt7MtKcoUTY8Ja3dmyQ is your change address. I don't own a keepkey wallet, but in the wallet overview, it should look like only 0.2 was sent from your wallet (in other words, if you balance showed 1.2 BTC before creating the transaction, it should show 1.0 BTC right now... A little less because of the fee, but close to 1 BTC). If this isn't true, chances are that your wallet (or the server you connect to) isn't completely sync'ed, or the wallet software is hanging/lagging... I'd just wait a couple of hours and restart my software.

This is how bitcoins work... Simply put, when you create a transaction, you use unspent outputs as an input for your transaction.
Your transaction takes unspent outputs as inputs to generate new outputs. Think of it like a never ending chain... Outputs used as inputs to generate new outputs which can be used as inputs to generate new outputs,...

Now, an input is always the complete value of the input, so if you have an input of 100 BTC, and you want to send 1 BTC => you generate a transaction, using the 100 BTC as an input, and create 2 outputs => a 1 BTC output to the receiver, and a 99 BTC output to a change address. This change address is also managed by your wallet software, so for the end user, it should look like only 1 BTC was sent, while in reality, you sent 1 BTC to the receiver and 99 BTC to yourself ;)

In your case:
transaction 71574c563c4a77f99f485323c7c33c30c57243768e43f751266386fbc28251fd
uses as an input, the 0.6 BTC unspent output of transaction 81242a7c6ce7d376e384d05566ee2194408421e5cee0ff96a375a7e35982cd9d
it creates 2 outputs: 0.2 BTC to 1KBu9rnJrUHEUBpUwPe3HTur5hXTkceQ9F and 0.399546 to (what i assume is) your change address 1DNDzF8icnrmtqpVt7MtKcoUTY8Ja3dmyQ

0.6 (input) - ((0.2 + 0.399546) (outputs)) = 0.000454 (fee)

Thank you very much for your detailed response! I learned a lot from it.

Unfortunately, my wallet has -0.6 BTC sent but only shows .2 in the transaction log.

"If this isn't true, chances are that your wallet (or the server you connect to) isn't completely sync'ed, or the wallet software is hanging/lagging... I'd just wait a couple of hours and restart my software."

I am going to hope this is the case!!!

Thanks again!

It's been nearly 10 hours now and no luck!

My Keepkey wallet still shows a balance with .4 BTC MIssing :(

Is it possible that keepkey could have generated the wrong, or bad, Change Address? Therefor I would not receive that .4 BTC Back to my account ?

I've reached out to KeepKey as well.

As i've said before: i don't own a keepkey, but an error in the change address generation would be highly unlikely, since deriving from an xprv is pretty straightforeward... Once you have the derivation path setup, there is little room for errors.

The main problem is that i cannot check if the change address can be derived from your xpub generated by your seed words without asking for the xprv and/or the seed... And asking these things would be highly immoral, since you'd be giving away complete controll over your wallet (never do this, nor for me, not for anyone else).

Keepkey support might be your best option...

I talked with Keepkey support multiple times throughout the day. Was able to get the issue resolved. Issue was passed onto their engineer who had to reconstruct the wallet.

Must say, Keepkey support was amazing to work with.

Thanks again for your help.

:D

So, reading this reply, i can only assume that the ~0.4 was indeed sent to a change address, the address was derived correctly (since the engineer was able to reconstruct it), but some bug inside keepkey skipped some change addresses while deriving?
It's great to hear keepkey support is good to work with, it's defenately a +1 for them!

It is good to know that Keepkey has good customer support, that is always the sign of a good company willing to back up what they sell.

@OP, if you could update us on how you got on it would be much appreciated. I have wanted one of these since i seen them released so an update or quick review on how good the hardware wallet is would be good, it may also get you a tip from me if you give a detailed review.

I am having this exact same issue. How do I reach KeepKey Tech Support. So far they have only sent me a couple of emails and I cannot get through by phone. Here is what happened to me. I opened my wallet and clicked send btc to an address and the amount was - 0.065335 fee was- 0.0009776 . the keepkey asked me to put in my pin to confirm and then to push button at to top transfer. It showed me the address on the keepkey once again and I checked it and pushed the button on the top to transfer the btc. Then I clicked on details on the transaction and it opened up the block cypher window. I watched as the first confirmation. Then I noticed the amount was 0.40302806 not the 0.065335 plus fee 0.0009776. I saw two input addresses and two output addresses. I saw the address on the top right as the address I was sending the 0.065335 to The other three addresses I didn't recognize. When I checked back to my balance of BTC, I noticed it was reduced by 0.40302806 (where it still is today) I was expecting the balance to be reduced by the0.065335 plus fee 0.0009776 only. The email from KK Tech said they were looking into where the change went. It is definitely not in my wallet. Can anyone offer any help?
