Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss of Facebook fame have opened a bitcoin exchange in New York City.
Gemini Trust Company received a banking charter from the New York State Department of Financial Services, the same agency behind the controversial BitLicense.
The exchange is now licensed as a limited liability trust company. This allows Gemini to accept deposits from both individual and institutional clients.
Gemini will begin operating in 26 states and the District of Columbia with more jurisdictions in the future.
It now sits alongside Coinsetter, Coinbase, and itBit as the newest regulated bitcoin exchange in the United States and moves bitcoin one step closer to full acceptance by traditional financial institutions.
