Bitcoin exchanges are under attack

Tue Nov 17, 2015 4:02 pm

It's not been unusual from time to time to hear about a bitcoin exchange being under DDoS attack here and there, but over the past few weeks, it seems many exchanges have come under attack. There seems to be some coordinated attack on bitcoin exchanges going on, knocking many offline, with a few over just the past 24-48 hours. We've heard of the bigger ones in the past, such as Kraken and OKCoin. There other ones that are happening too. Some are for ransom. Some aren't saying, they just say DDoS... maybe the attackers if successful, then move on to extort, not sure. But something is going on and exchanges are the target.

Looks like an amazing opportunity for someone to create the first P2P exchange???

They exist, but there is no truly decentralized exchange when it comes to dealing in-or-out of fiat. When you deal with govt money, you *have* to deal with banks, regulations, and intermediaries. Only true p2p exist in crypto only, coin swap exchanges...

When my clients are hit with a DDOS, besides standard filtering - I tell them to sit tight and up the marketing budget for next month. This way, any losses are recouped. Just gotta let those packets hit the armor and bounce off :)

While under attack, a glass of scotch each night works too, even if you don't like scotch!

I agree, and again say this looks like an opportunity for someone smarter than I... there is a way to do it, some smart hacker will figure it out.

Ha, yes, the good old days. Now there are over 160 exchanges globally and rising. However, I do believe that this year we will continue to see some exchanges close down, see some mergers, see some acquisitions, so the number is fluid. Bitcoin will continue to grow, so in places where the market hasn't had many users before, we may see a rise in exchanges. For example in the Middle East and India, they are just starting to find out about bitcoin. There are new exchanges coming up over there now, and I can see more coming up as it gets popular. I think Latin America will be another hotbed of activity. The great thing about bitcoin is it's worldwide. :)
