Heya!

I first found out about Bitcoin in 2012 after reading an article about Satoshidice, the former #1 Bitcoin gambling site at the time. As somebody who was trying to break into the gambling industry this spiked my attention and I was astounded by how useful Bitcoin could be for online gambling.

I was instantly immersed into the world of Bitcoin and started my first Bitcoin related project, Primedice, alongside Stunna (He will also possibly be answering questions in this thread). Primedice was released May 2013 and aimed to create the simplest and easiest way to gamble on the internet - And that's exactly what we did. We've always prided ourselves on simplicity and convenience.

Gambling has always been a touchy subject in the Bitcoin scene but it's also the leading industry that Bitcoin is used for. More Bitcoin is spent on gambling than anything else. This is a definite sign that gambling is healthy for the Bitcoin ecosystem. Feel free to argue that point though!

Anyway enough introduction, ask my anything you want ranging from the legal landscape of Bitcoin gambling to simple stuff such as game mechanics. I'll answer what I can to the best of my ability!

By what metric do you consider primedice to be the largest gambling site?
Why do you think sites like Satoshidice and Justdice lost favor?
Why is the crux of bitcoin gambling still silly "dice games"? I'm still waiting for a decent bitcoin poker room.

Hi Edward,

Do your engineers have Poker in the pipeline?
Based on the growing bridges from Fiat to Bitcoin, I believe this is a billion dollar opportunity.

If you're seriously exploring this opportunity, I can join your team to setup a decent poker arena within a year.
Testing, securing and launching for real Bitcoins within two years. Budget to achieve this $ 300,000.00 USD

Goodluck with your business. Keep it fair and clean.

Cheers,
@Coinmarketswot

By what metric do you consider primedice to be the largest gambling site?
1) Number of deposits/withdrawals we receive (Can be compared to other sites on http://www.walletexplorer.com)
2) Volume of BTC we have wagered daily (Average of 2k BTC a day this year) - Viewable on http://www.thebitcoinstrip.com & http://www.dicesites.com
3) Number of individual bets (10 million+ a day) which can also be viewed on http://www.thebitcoinstrip.com & http://www.dicesites.com
4) Alexa traffic ranking

Judging off those 4 simple metrics it's a pretty safe claim to make.
Why do you think sites like Satoshidice and Justdice lost favor?
Satoshidice didn't keep up with competition as far as innovation goes.. Dicing changed after we entered the market and they stuck to the simple blockchain based version of the game. I think this is mainly due to Erik Voorhees selling the website.

Just-dice no longer accepts Bitcoin, just CLAMS. Dooglus, the owner of JD, felt pressured by holding large amounts of Bitcoin and dealing with the stress of running a website so he scaled it down to another crypto currency with less following. I believe he runs it more as a hobby now opposed as a profit stream.
Why is the crux of bitcoin gambling still silly "dice games"? I'm still waiting for a decent bitcoin poker room.
There are options for typical gambling such as slots, table games etc. but the Bitcoin community seems to favour dice. I'm not sure why exactly, but I'd personally choose dice too if I was going to gamble - The house edge is the lowest, it's simple, it offers an extremely large range of odds and has the strongest implication of provable fairness out of any other games.

As for Poker rooms, there are many. Sealswithclubs used to have (And still do I think on their new site?) over 200 active players at a time.

We have a massive project in the pipeline at the moment which we're going to be releasing fairly soon. It pretty much covers all aspects of gambling. I can't really discuss much about this though.

We're always looking for skilled developers however, so feel free to add me on Skype. It's in my signature below.

Hi Edward,

This may be a bit private but what does Primedice do with its earnings? Do you leave it all there in case someone wins big, or do you invest it in other projects and personal spending? Do you convert it to fiat? Do you and Stunna consider yourselves rich? :P

Hey!

All shareholders of Primedice tend to keep their savings in Bitcoin. We always have at least 2,000 BTC in our shared cold wallet incase of big winners. However all major shareholders, including myself, don't convert our private cold wallets to fiat except to cover living expenses. We're definitely strong believers in Bitcoin and see it rising in price in the future.

Thanks! When you say shareholders, do you mean founders/staff exclusively? Or is there a way where ordinary people can purchase small amounts of stake in the company?

2) your views on "International legal issues with gambling " or consequences you have faced in this long run.

3) Peimedice opinions on XT (also give a single word answer for what you think XT is) .

We don't publicly list shares of Primedice, no. By shareholders I mean the founding staff.

Which digital currency (litecoin, dogecoin, peercoin etc) do you think will be the biggest competitor to bitcoin in 5 years

In the past two years Bitcoin has done many things as we all know, what were your most exciting moments.

What are your next projects or what projects are you interested in related to cryptocurrency, or in general.

In 5 years where do you see PD, Bitcoin and 2.0's
(An extension would be if PD would ever consider taking altcoins or 2.0 coins, I'll even throw a wildcard and ask if PD would build its own game inside a sidechain/blockchain system someday )

What do you look forward to seeing Bitcoin do next.

If you had to name a price where you would sell your Bitcoin holdings besides living expenses where would you set it and what percentage of holdings would you keep lets say near perpetually.

Feel free to skip these ones
How much has Primedice made in two years and does it get tiring hanging out at a beach resort etc. ^^.

Since Stunna posted on talk that they will also answering questions here picks one out for ya.
How old is Stunna really and I should probably know this but is Stunna a boy or a girl.

Legal pressure definitely. Whilst we currently have everything under control it's only a matter of time before things start tightening up. This may cause issues.

Followed by larger gambling companies getting involved in Bitcoin. If a company with large funds and experience in the gambling scene gets involved in Bitcoin properly, it may be hard to compete.
2) your views on "International legal issues with gambling " or consequences you have faced in this long run.
Currently everything is fairly grey. I'm not able to get into specifics, but we've recently had to block US & Australian clients due to the changing legal landscape. We constantly are trying to ensure we keep up with changing legislation and ensure we're not breaking any laws.

We have a great legal counsel that ensures we're always fully informed. We definitely run a risk of unknowingly breaking laws as Bitcoin gambling is undefined in a lot of places at the moment, but that's something I'm sure all Bitcoin businesses are facing.
3) Peimedice opinions on XT (also give a single word answer for what you think XT is) .
The team at Primedice are actually a little tied up on this one. A few of us go either way.

I personally think Bitcoin XT should not be implemented. Satoshi made Bitcoin how it is and obviously thought this over. He would have implemented it if he thought it was necessary.

I like how Hal Finney says it. This was posted on Reddit yesterday I believe.
Actually there is a very good reason for Bitcoin-backed banks to exist, issuing their own digital cash currency, redeemable for bitcoins. Bitcoin itself cannot scale to have every single financial transaction in the world be broadcast to everyone and included in the block chain. There needs to be a secondary level of payment systems which is lighter weight and more efficient. Likewise, the time needed for Bitcoin transactions to finalize will be impractical for medium to large value purchases.

Bitcoin backed banks will solve these problems. They can work like banks did before nationalization of currency. Different banks can have different policies, some more aggressive, some more conservative. Some would be fractional reserve while others may be 100% Bitcoin backed. Interest rates may vary. Cash from some banks may trade at a discount to that from others.
George Selgin has worked out the theory of competitive free banking in detail, and he argues that such a system would be stable, inflation resistant and self-regulating.

I believe this will be the ultimate fate of Bitcoin, to be the "high-powered money" that serves as a reserve currency for banks that issue their own digital cash. Most Bitcoin transactions will occur between banks, to settle net transfers. Bitcoin transactions by private individuals will be as rare as... well, as Bitcoin based purchases are today.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic ... 1#msg34211

At the end of the day I'm not too fussed. I'm sure either way the Bitcoin core devs are going to make sure Bitcoin goes in the right direction - They know more than I do that's for sure.

Sum it up in one word? Drama.

I don't really keep up with alternative currencies, but I don't think any of them are going to hinder Bitcoin.

I do however think something down the track will appear and be a serious threat - And we'll all know it straight away.

Hi,

First of all thanks for running a great gambling site. I agree using bitcoin for gambling simply makes sense. And, as DiceSites.com owner, I can attest that you guys have been the biggest bitcoin gambling site for a long while now :) I got 3 questions:

1. In my impression most bitcoin communities (reddit, bitcointalk, bitcoin.com, etc) are worldwide. However, Russia and China seem to be more independent and have their own communities in their own language.

Once Stunna said 53.56% of the visitors were Russian, so that's great. So I am wondering about China.. It's common to say "Bitcoin is big in China" and "Chinese people love to gamble". Do you guys try to target them too? If so, did you have any success with that? If not, any plans/thoughts about that?

2. Some people seem to think it's easy to start and operate a bitcoin gambling website, but obviously it can be difficult. What things do you think people mostly underestimate at starting and operating a site like that? Eg: what are some of the challenges you guys had in the last 2+ years? (I can guess 1 huge issue/setback, but still interested to hear more.)

3. As you said, you had to block PD for US and Australia. How does it make you personally feel that for the land of the free, the USA, you cannot provide a game? Do you think these laws/regulation will ever change in a more open/modern way?

Thanks. That's all for now. Also, looking forward for that new project/game :)

What was the biggest win so far on Primedice?

Thanks

Hi Edward,

is there any information available on the stack Primedice is built on? What I am the most curious about is how transactions are being processed. Whenever I considered working on a project myself this is what got me stumped.

Thank you.

I'll be taking over and answering some questions throughout the day.
Hi,

First of all thanks for running a great gambling site. I agree using bitcoin for gambling simply makes sense. And, as DiceSites.com owner, I can attest that you guys have been the biggest bitcoin gambling site for a long while now :) I got 3 questions:
Thanks for running such a great service, Ed and I extensively use your website to track competition.
1. In my impression most bitcoin communities (reddit, bitcointalk, bitcoin.com, etc) are worldwide. However, Russia and China seem to be more independent and have their own communities in their own language. Once Stunna said 53.56% of the visitors were Russian, so that's great. If not, any plans/thoughts about that?
We've had zero success targeting China. We released a localized version of PD2 and it did not take off at all. We haven't been able to figure out how people in China are gambling bitcoin or if they are at all. A lot of the Chinese based services I've watched never managed to reach much popularity.

The scale of the Chinese bitcoin market is a bit dubious with bitcoin investors hyping up China as the driving force behind all the pumps. I won't deny that a large amount of mining is taking place within China but from my perspective it doesn't seem that China has a large & diverse bitcoin community whatsoever even if it may have whale investors/miners. Since the launch of PD I'd argue that less than half a percent of our volume has been driven by China. Russia on the other hand has accounted for a large amount of users and volume without any marketing or attempt to target that market.

The truth is chucking together a working bitcoin gambling site especially with all the leaked code out there is super easy. The real issue comes with being there to deal with the constant issues that arise and building a secure enough system that can ensure that you actually manage to turn a profit. Even when everything is working as it should you still can end up losing, when we launched PD1 we lost every bitcoin we owned to whales.

In terms of issues, from day one we've had significant setbacks on a fairly regular basis, we've probably lost over 3000 coins to both dumb and preventable issues and more sophisticated exploits. When we launched PD originally, I was getting less sleep than I've ever gotten in my life and would frequently have to wake up at strange hours to deal with X catastrophic issue one after the other. The blessing and curse of all this was we never imagined PD would be this massive, we cut a lot of corners when developing each version of PD to try and push it out as fast as possible and that led to a variety of issues.

We've since resolved all these issues and the site runs super smoothly and requires minimum work on mine or Ed's part. Our effort has been shifted to the development of our new website.

My advice to anyone looking to enter this space, hire a very very skilled & trustworthy developer who isn't just going to build the site but partner with you and work with you to monitor it. When we settled for a 'good' developer it ended up costing us over $1M worth of bitcoin in exploits (hufflepuff etc) . Bugs are of course inevitable, but you need a developer who will work with you to detect and patch any issues before they lead to massive losses.
3. As you said, you had to block PD for US and Australia. How does it make you personally feel that for the land of the free, the USA, you cannot provide a game? Do you think these laws/regulation will ever change in a more open/modern way?
Much like how we see marijuana legalization beginning to spread throughout the USA, I feel the next wave will be gambling but not for 5-10 years. NY state actually just banned Fanduel/Draftkings from accepting deposits today. As cryptocurrency gets bigger the USA is going to realize that people will still be playing but on less reputable websites that are willing to accept US residents and the money will continue to flow out of the US.

Right now the Vegas casino lobby is too powerful, and there's also incentive for the new multi billion dollar fantasy sports websites to oppose legalization of online gambling. If given the opportunity, we would apply for a license to operate within the US rather than continue to block half our potential market who then go on to play on less reputable sites.

Gambling regulation is an absolute lose-lose situation for both the US government and its citizens, the only people who benefit from them are billionaire casino magnates like Sheldon Adelson and the politicians who are shady or desperate enough to accept the legalized bribery that is campaign financing from such figures.

Thanks. That's all for now. Also, looking forward for that new project/game :)
It's a lot more impressive than Primedice or any online gambling offering I've seen, I'm extremely excited for it. It isn't coming out in the near future though.

We're working on various games, building a provably fair poker game from scratch is an incredibly ambitious project but hopefully we can get around to it at some point.

What are the biggest current and future threats to your operation?

Whats 1 thing thats a mistake that you wish you never made?

Have any of your competitors personally threatened your dominance in the bitcoin gambling frontier?

Has prime dice changed your yearly income dramatically or not?

And are you personally a big ticket spender or more conservative when it comes to shopping?

Will bitcoin transaction confirmation times affects the currencies price and usability, and viability for casino operations such as yours?

Do you consider offering gambling to be a moral issue? Is your view "If we wouldn't offer it they would gamble on another site" or do you think that some people may have started gambling by finding primedice and maybe wouldn't have started otherwise?

What percentage of PrimeDice players do you think are underage? Do you consider it an issue that players do not have to provide any personal data?

Do you think PD could possibly be the first to develop a 100% provably fair lottery system :?:

I was one of the first to join your great signature campaigns back in the day, and used all that money to gamble. Missing those days and the fun I had.

Thanks for everything you did for Bitcoin and those signature bonuses. :D If I may ask, why did you change that?

http://wizardofodds.com/gambling/house-edge/ This is a decent overview, however it assumes "perfect play" as in you are making the highest EV decision at every move. The edges can actually be a lot higher if you aren't playing the optimal strategies which is often challenging to do especially as the casino floods you with free booze and the distractions that come with being in that environment.

With regards to the first point, we don't display a general warning based off loss, when you click max bet there are two confirmations you must click through before betting going 'all in'.

I don't consider it to be a moral issue, I view it purely as entertainment and enjoy responsible gambling myself. I definitely hit a point where I thought PD was a net negative for the community but then I watched site after site scam users out of countless thousands of coins. PD is a safe-haven for people who want to bet where the user knows the roll will not be manipulated and knows exactly what the odds are.

At the end of the day gambling is the choice of the individual, but what is truly a shame is when casinos fleece unsuspecting users who think they are getting the advertised odds. We're even seeing this in multi billion dollar websites like Fanduel/Draftkings where employees have allegedly been playing with insider information to scam users out of significant sums. Many may disagree but If Primedice and our future offerings can bring provably fair gambling and a lower edge to the masses we will have definitively impacted this industry in a positive way.

Makes sense. With 1% house edge, and reasonable betting, say the ability to pace yourself, there's plenty of time to re-evaluate.

No new question but look forward to your new games, really simple and fair poker html5esque has been sorely missed.

Hi

First of all,

I had a lot a fun with this game, lost some coins as well but it was all just a game to me , I knew, up front what the risks would be. Not saying that profit is the core reason for joining such a game.

Sadly, I lost the password (wrote it down somewher in the complete stack of....) and never bothered to make an e-mail link. Autologin was unabled by some visitor and in complete innocence eradicated my few clicks login. It is not that there is so much on it, it's just the namethat matters to me.

I thought I lost it anyhow but now that I see that you are here, ill just spit it out I thought.

So here's my question: Could there still be by any chance just may be a way to recover that account?

Why did you remove pvp from pd? Was it too resource intensive? If not, then why not bring it back for the people who want to play on it(hide it for those who don't want to see it). As simple as that.
