[2017-06-19] 70 Percent of the Bitcoin Hashrate Begins Signaling Segwit2x

Mon Jun 19, 2017 9:01 pm

On June 16 the alpha code for the scaling solution Segwit2x was released to the public following a large number of mining pools having vocally supported the plan. Since then a large majority of miners who back the Segwit2x roadmap have started signaling with their hashrate.

On June 18 the mining pool Bitfury began signaling for the New York agreement by using the call letters “NYA” in its mined blocks. The very next day a large majority of miners have also started showing support for the Segwit2x plan. As of right now, mining pools who support the agreement by signaling NYA in their blocks are Antpool, Bitcoin.com, Bixin, BTC.com, BTC.top, F2pool, Viabtc, and 1hash. The amount of support for the Segwit2x agreement is close to 70 percent of the network hashrate.

What should we be looking for next in regards to progression toward full adoption or whatever key milestones would indicate success or failure of the NYA attempts? How long would this "test" or attempt be expected to last before we know the final result?

Thanks for entertaining the questions from a non-technical fellow.

Segwit 2x requires 80% support rather than the 95% support of the first version. This makes it likely that when available (July 21st) we will see a hard fork requiring an upgrade for all those running Bitcoin core

I've been doing as much reading as possible about the various proposals and suspected consequences, to avoid offering uneducated questions here. The most recent issue I'm having is understanding which among the expert talking heads have the most balanced or vetted or well thought through opinion on all of this. Is there any small group of folks considered to have the best dialed in sense about all this?
