The Bitcoin Store (store.bitcoin.com) is pleased to announce a charitable partnership with the Dogecoin community called the “Shibes For Socks” project. By working with the Los Angeles-based Love My Neighbor Foundation, the organizations have collaborated to deliver socks to the homeless within the region.

The Bitcoin Store Sponsors a Dogecoin Multi-Signature Powered Charitable Sock Drive

The Dogecoin community has been well-known over the past few years for dedicating funds and efforts towards charity. The “Shibes For Socks” project is a new endeavor devoted to delivering socks to the homeless. The Bitcoin Store is the first sponsor of the new program assisting in helping the homeless obtain basic human necessities. Socks are considered an under-donated need for homeless, many of whom are constantly on their feet. The Shibes For Socks project aims to help provide new socks to the homeless regularly with the next delivery date this coming February.

Sounds like a cool project.
I must admit socks really aren't the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of what to donate to the homeless but i can't help thinking that those socks are going to get warn out pretty quickly without a pair of shoes, hopefully the charity will branch out.

I think it's designed more for attention rather than for real help (because socks really catch it), but anyways if it can help some people in need, the real one - why not?

You'd be very surprised just how important & valuable socks are to a person who finds themselves homeless.

I have a few friends that unfortunately have experienced homelessness in the past, and we live in a relatively temperate climate with winter temperatures rarely dropping below 0 degrees Celsius. If your shoes / socks get wet and it's not a warm, sunny day you're going to have a hard time drying them out, especially in colder climates and particularly if you don't have a second pair to wear while they dry out.

If the clothing around your extremities is wet you're going to find yourself getting very cold very quickly, and your body will react automatically by sending blood flowing to your extremities which actually makes you lose heat even faster. The importance to a homeless person of well insulating, good thick socks (and a pair to spare) can't be overestimated.

Socks also wear through very quickly, with the rate of wear increasing if you're walking around a lot in shoes that might have seen better days. Socks with holes all over them are better than no socks at all, but not by much if you're depending on them to keep your toes and feet warm. Fresh socks and underwear are some of the best things that you can receive if you're homeless, and for homeless women feminine hygiene products such as tampons and pads are so, so important.

If you're the type of person that doesn't like to give money directly to a homeless person for whatever reason and prefer to buy them a meal or a coffee, often times items we take for granted like socks, underwear and hygiene products are a better choice than food.
