Internet speed and bandwidth is not really related to hashing power. Mining started as CPU mining then evolved to specialized devices called FPGA's, and now ASICs.

These ASICs have processor cores specifically designed for SHA256 hashing.

When solo mining, all work is done locally and only when a block is found is the solution transmitted across the Bitcoin network.

When mining in a pool, miners work on "shares" which are essentially smaller targets than the current Bitcoin difficulty and only serve to prove the amount of work each miner has done for payment purposes.

Network usage in both cases is minimal.
