Lost miners? Help a total noob.

Mon Jan 08, 2018 12:03 am

Hello, everybody. Brand new miner here. Don't really know what I'm doing yet.

I have four Antminer S1s (Yeah, I know, they're ancient, and they'd lose money for me but for one thing...I don't have to pay the power bill!) and I just got the first one up and running.

I've got it pointed at the right pool.

The little green LEDs on each ASIC board are flashing like mad. It's hashing like mad. Activity monitor shows that it's doing what it should, right about 180 GH/S.

The name of this miner, my first worker, "Baby Huey" (not really, would you expect me to tell all?) but in my pool dashboard I am not seeing Baby Huey or anything at all that indicates I have an active miner. But the miner is working, it's getting

What I don't get at the moment is, how does the pool even know that a given miner is one of mine? I've pointed it at the pool and presumably the pool is getting my meager contributions but I don't have any proof from my dashboard that Baby Huey even exists.

And what's with this pool password thing? Any password will do as long as it's not blank? How does that even work?

I'd hate to be contributing work to the pool and the system doesn't give me any credit for it.

Now is the time for me to learn and figure this out before I put all the units to work which won't bring a lot of money but I'd rather "lose" 50 cents a day due to a configuration problem than 2 dollars a day.

Hi Chris,

What pool are you mining? If you're mining our pool (see below) you may use any Bitcoin mining ASIC over 300 GH/s (e.g., Antminer S9 and Avalon 721).

Antminer S1 is only 180 GH/s (maybe 200 GH/s).

Yes, I was trying to mine our pool. I guess my hashrate is too low to be accepted.

But there's a funny thing about that....my machines still get sent work by the server. I'd have imagined that if the machine doesn't meet the established criteria, then the server wouldn't even send any work to the miners. That would make a lot more sense than to send work and ignore the output.

I'll find some pools that can work with my lower hashrate.

But on the bright side, all four of my miners work, no bad ASICs, and I can run them on power that I don't have to pay for. So they may only bring me maybe 80 bucks a month but it's free money. I'll take that.

I may start snapping up old S1s and other models as fast as I can mine enough to pay for them, and of course give priority to faster units. At some point I'm hoping to make enough that it changes my financial picture appreciably. Same as everybody else, I suppose.
