BCH can usually be recovered from a BTC address, but this is something that can only be carried out a the receivers end.
If you have sent the BCH to an exchange BTC address, then you have probably sent to a multisig or segwit address (address starting with "3") the exchange would be using for their hot wallet. Recovering BCH from a segwit address is almost impossible without the help of a miner, and recovering BCH from a multisig BTC address can take a long time depending on how many keys are associated with the receiving address.
Some exchanges will help user recover BCH sent to their BTC address, but they will only agree to do so and only if it is possible. Exchanges that do help recover BCH for clients will normally always charge a fee for their time needed to spend on the recovery process.
If the exchange will not agree to help recover the BCH for you, unfortunately there is nothing you can do as both BCH and BTC are irreversible currencies.
