Bitcoin.com wallet sends BCH to addresses beginning with 3...?

Wed Dec 06, 2017 12:34 pm

I wanted to transfer BTC from Bitcoin.com wallet to Xapo.com wallet. The receiving address begins with 3..

You can see it here https://blockchair.com/search?q=34LA7L9 ... HTivaP3rhn
And on the BTC blockchain here https://blockchain.info/address/34LA7L9 ... HTivaP3rhn

When I completed transfer, Bitcoin.com wallet has transferred BCH instead. Since Xapo.com wallet does not recognise BCH this means that BCH is probably lost.

Does Bitcoin.com wallet default to transferring BCH to addresses beginning with 3...? During the transfer it looked like it was transferring BTC (lots of orange, no green). Whenever I repeat a send to that address, Bitcoin.com wallet defaults to sending BCH with no option to choose BTC.

Can anyone help me understand what is going on here? Thanks.

Addresses that start with a 3 can either be a regular p2sh or a SegWit address.
The wallet can't know if it is a BTC or BCH address because p2sh addresses are valid on both chains. SegWit addresses are only valid on the BTC chain.

If it is a p2sh address than xapo could refund you the transaction but there is no guarantee that they will provide this service.
If it is a SegWit address you will need the help of a BCH miner to get it back. I think btc.com provides such a service.
