Recovery of old wallet

I registered or downloaded Bitcoin almost at the intro of Bitcoin on a computer that has now long gone due to upgrades. My problem is from memory I cannot recall if I successfully bought Bitcoin and would like to check the wallet. However, I did record the wallet address along with my password but cannot find a way of even loading or looking at this wallet perhaps due to upgrades of the early program. Back then was the wallet stored on the old computer and is this why I cant find it?
