We are very sorry to hear about your son's death, that must be hard.
Unfortunately without the wallet password you probably won't be able to recover the bitcoins he had. Do you know what bitcoin wallet he was using?

Sorry for your loss. The first step would be to figure out what type of wallet client he had. Did he use Bitcoin core, electrum, blockchain.info or something else entirely? Do you have access to his computer.
