Fri Nov 20, 2015 8:55 pm

Whats the best way to create Cold Storage using a paper wallet (Im using PC that has never been connected to the internet and is running Ubuntu OS) to a usb(with instructions on if i should encrypt both the file and the drive and if i can use any USB stick or if i need a specific one like Sandisk,Transcend or kingston etc..)?

Hey what operating system are you using? Knowing that will help to suggest encryption software. What I would suggest, is to encrypt the file itself (you can do this with most bitcoin wallets) and then also encrypt the entire thumb drive.

Important: Make backups

Buy a Mycelium entropy USB devise,
Remove internet cable from frinter, insert the USB entropy and hit print and that's it. You now have 100% safe paper wallet, keys never been online. Simple.

I have 1 left for sale if your interested but they go very quick.

Edit: sold

linux(Ubuntu 15.10). what encryption software do you suggest(truencrypt isn't that safe anymore i heard due to it being preparatory)? What encryption software does encrypt both the file and the entire thumb drive itself?

Awesome, so on Ubunutu you can actually just install the cryptsetup package, and then you'll be able to format thumbdrives with an encrypted file system. Here's a guide that the ubuntu community made specifically for your distro. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Encry ... bleStorage

I'm a debian guy so I'm sure if you run into any issues I can help out just let me know :)

How do specifically encrypt a file(containing the paperwallet) and the whole thumb drive(and be able to decrypt it using a different OS like Windows or Mac osx)?

Being able to decrypt the file in Windows might be challenging. I know that 7-zip offers a minimal amount of encryption, maybe a more simplified solution like that would work better in your case.

Would you recomend veracrypt for encrypting paper wallets on linux? I The Cryptopackage that you receomended to install it do you need to be connected to the internet?

I've never used any of the GUI tools since I find it easier to just use the disk utility and format the disk with an encrypted LVM, I hope that someone on here can help you out suggesting one of the GUI tools. And you will need to have access to the internet to install any packages from the Ubuntu repository, you can download the packages on another computer and copy it over though.

edit: based on responses in your other thread, veracrypt looks like the way to go

Instead of going through all this trouble, why not just get a Ledger HW.1? They're cheap and very secure. Look at the review on my website. It may be a better solution for you.

Using flash memory for long-term storage is not recommended, because the memory cells need a refresh from time to time or they will loose their content. You should at least keep an additional printout as backup.

Why do people keep spreading this? That report was a misunderstanding. In a worst case scenario, sure, they fail without warning. Keeping backups is always good. But leaving it unplugged? That's bull.

Would you bet your BTC on it? :D

Discharging of the cells goes very slowly - when I write "long-term storage" it means years, not weeks!

It's a hard to find fact, not much evidence about it in the web. I guess that flash memory manufacturers don't want to tell you about it. Have a look at this: http://static.usenix.org/events/fast/te ... rs/Liu.pdf
A reliable storage system needs to provide a retention guarantee. Therefore, Flash memories have to meet the retention specification in industrial standards. For example, according to the JEDEC standard JESD47G.01 [19], NAND Flash blocks cycled to 10% of the maximum specified endurance must retain data for 10 years, and blocks cycled to 100% of the maximum specified en-
durance have to retain data for 1 year. As NAND Flash technology continues to scale down and more bits are stored in a cell, the raw reliability of NAND Flash decreases substantially.

And the PDF you just linked is quoting the same JEDEC presentation the article I just linked said was misquoted by the internet.

Please allow me to quote from the article you've linked:
This is not to belittle the underlying message that non-volatile memory media isn’t forever, and in no way suitable for archiving.
Enough said. Please put your bitcoins elsewhere for long-term storage.

No. Instead I will have a healthy backup system that isn't poisoned by FUD based on misquoted sources. My backup method uses the technology as intended, understands the failure points of each part, and removes any single point of failure.

Stick with paper if you wish. I have no problem with that. But declaring "enough said" is a childish response to discussion of other methods.

Good luck with this! I hope your "backup method" uses something reliable. I wouldn't trust my trezor one bitcoin without the seed words on a piece of paper!
