Importing wallet - Your help most appreciated

Fri Mar 20, 2020 2:48 pm

I've been trying for ages to import a BTC Bitcoin Walet into the Bitcoin Wallet app on my Macbook

The wallet actually belongs to a friend of mine who has chosen to no longer use a mobile phone, but I have kept all the relevant details for his wallet, including a bitcoin URL, the wallet address, the 12 word recovery phrase and the password.

However when I attempt to use the import feature on the app, it only asks for the 12 word recovery phrase and if I just type in the 12 words, or if I copy and paste them (with the 12 numbers), I just get an error message "Could not import: Wallet recovery phrase is invalid"

I have also tried selecting the Advanced Options and typing in the password, only to get the same error message

As I have no Bitcoins in the wallet that was automatically created when I installed the app, is there a means of starting from scratch and using the details of the original wallet?

Or is there a means of entering the bitcoin URL or wallet address into the app to identify it, rather than the 12 word recovery phrase.

Every few months my friend asks me what has happened to his Bitcoin (I seem to recall he had 0.17 BTC in there previously) and each time he asks me, I revisit my efforts to access the wallet, all to no avail

With my utmost thanks in advance to anyone who has the time & the patience to offer some assistance
Best Regards
Bernard

Hello Bernard! The right way to import the BTC wallet with the backup protected by the password via the desktop app would be the following:
1. Press on '+' on the main page of the app.
2. Choose 'Import wallet'
3. Enter the 12-word recovery phrase (single space between the words, no space after the last word)
4. Set the currency to BTC
5. Press on 'Show advanced options' and enter the password via the 'Password' field, then press 'Import'.

If you are getting the error, then you might have written down an invalid backup phrase. Please check the list below and make sure that all the words match the words from the list: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt

If the backup is correct, please doublecheck the password. You can only import the wallet successfully if you enter the valid backup + the valid password. Otherwise, the funds will be lost, I'm afraid.
