[GUIDE] How to Sign/Verify message in NEW Blockchain Wallet

Mon Aug 08, 2016 1:34 am

Signing a message with your Bitcoin address can be an incredibly useful thing to know how to do as it allows you to prove that you own a specific address.

All credit for this guide goes to 'Th0ur007' on the censored forum:
Introduction:
Hello,

I am going to tell you how to sign or verify a message in NEW Blockchain wallet. We are already aware with this feature but the new wallet is a little bit confusing, so i am gonna tell you how it will go! Follow:

Signing a Message
Step 1 -
First of all login to your wallet and click Settings Tab on your left navigation bar.

Step 2 -
Click on Addresses under Settings Tab, Once you did you will see your address section in the center of the page.

Step 3 -
Now, Click on Manage Addresses infront of Imported Addresses section.

Step 4 -
You will see all your addresses associated with your wallet. Simply click on More Options on the right side.

Step 5 -
Click Sign Message and you are done!

Example:

Code: Select all

Address: 18L6tGTdJfCenGxzc8ZDLsjBNaUfekXzjj Message: Signing a message for showing an example Signature: IMAb7CPGgkUeKu5ft0NgyTrQjWFTWFhjwGob3+NpK+x5NF6uRNV2qPx4uf7wuoe6KnVSsNf42Jq4in8KtBbmVE4=
FREMONT EDIT:
If you wish for somebody else to be able to verify a message that you have signed, make sure you provide them with the Bitcoin address you're using to sign the message, the exact text of the message that you have signed, and the signature (long code consisting of letters, numbers and symbols). Make sure that you are very specific in your message; for instance, if you wish to verify to another person or company that you own a certain address, you should sign the message using the text:
"I, *username here*, am signing this message with *Bitcoin address here* on *today's date here* in order to prove ownership of this address."

Verifying a Message
Step 1 -
Click on Addresses under Settings Tab, Once you did you will see your address section in the center of the page.

Step 2 -
Now, Click on Manage Addresses infront of Imported Addresses section.

Step 3 -
Just above your addresses, there is a big button named "More Actions".

Step 4 -
Click on the button and select Verify message! Done ;)

Hello, is there any other way to get a signed message except bitcoin wallet? I have researched the internet and found out about Gpg4win's Kleopatra but I'm confused how to use it. Can you give other method or if you know Kleopatra can you help me? Thanks in advance

Hello RonCar,

There certainly are ways to sign messages without using a Bitcoin address. :) Signing with a Bitcoin address is usually used to prove identity (if that address is known to belong to you) or to prove ownership of the funds in the address.

What I think you are talking about is PGP signing / encryption, something that you can read more about at the link below; this tutorial is aimed towards Windows users, but if you use a different operating system please let me know and I can direct you to another tutorial:

Cheers, and kudos for your interest in learning how to use PGP - it's an increasingly important tool in an increasingly oppressive world!

I've been in province several days so I just replied now anyway thanks for this great tutorial, I will study this guide in my free time to know more. I think I quite have an understanding now the different purpose of signed message though bitcoin wallet from email encryption.

Last time i check you could only sign imported addresses from the old legacy wallet, not sure why you can't sign addressee created within the new blockchain wallet but worth looking into.

I can sign address in the old wallet or old address
for the moment in the latest version blockchain.info, we can't do that.
it's only available for the old wallet or old address.

Thank you for this little quick guide! Was actually wondering about this a couple of days ago.. I'm not the most tech savvy guy so these guides are always helpful!

Currently trying to move over to another wallet service only for the security issue. Also looking at just getting a hardware wallet :D.

Hello guys,

I tried to provide a signed message on my wallet at blockchain.info
However, how I do generate a signature?

I see all signatures look like a very long list of characters, numbers and signs, how do I generate this signature?

I tried to enter a random signature and was told the length was incorrect.

Do i need to receive a payment to the address in order to sign a message?

Thanks
Regards

I don't believe this feature is currently supported in the mobile wallet - I think the instructions above are desktop wallet only.

That is correct, the Bitcoin.com wallet does not yet have this feature.
It is something that we are looking to introduce in the near future ;)
