seems safer to keep an eye on exchanges with high volume and some longevity
also, it would help to post which features these exchanges have, such as api access, kyc policies, etc.
the reasons you state are the reasons I got into bitcoin i like having the responsibility for my own money, and also because some banks not out there making cash off of my deposit. i'd rather lend the money myself and charge someone barely anything than have some bank take over someones car or house...

it makes sense for a government to work with people seeking to diversify their investments
it is literally impossible to stop bitcoin or bitcoin mining, so a government seeking to work with people looking to mine makes the most amount of sense
i myself have never used sports gambling sites, but i do know they exist, the only issue being that user reviews can be faked, and while betting a small amount of btc might not hurt much if you lose it, there are no regulations that would hold any site accountable for online betting with btc.

I've known a few people with tons of bitcoin and alts that haven't bothered reporting their holdings for a while, as they figure they'll just get a letter in the mail demanding payment one day.
I am a fan of hardware wallets and steel plates where i can store my recovery seed(s) i keep the hw wallets near my computer, as im usually doing gigs where i accept btc as payment, and i keep the steel plates in a safe, hidden somewhere in my house i like being able to confirm transactions /address...

the creator(s) of bitcoin is unknown and unless something drastic happens, we will never know who created bitcoin or what the real reason was.
