Re: If people are wondering why there are not more companies supporting big blocks, the recent smear campaign shows why.

I don't think it is any real secret that Coinbase is a proponent for large blocks. Just before when Bitfinex got hacked last August, around when there was a miner conference with the blockstream core devs, there were numerous reddit threads claiming that coinbase was insolvent, that they had been ha...

Re: New details emerge about Bitfinex’s history amid hacking probe

It’s unclear at the time if Bitfinex still had 50% of funds on Mt. Gox at the time of the collapse, but it’s fully plausible that Bitfinex lost a considerable amount of funds when Mt. Gox shutdown. If this is the case, Bitfinex may have began running a fractional exchange as far back as 2014. We kn...

I always wanted to give theymos the benefit of the doubt in regards to his moderation policies, as I always thought that he had the best interest of Bitcoin at heart, but simply did not fully understand fully understand the ramifications of his decisions and the economics of what he supported. Those that support smaller blocks will say that Moore's law, which is essentially the basis for your claim that "8GB blocks will not seem big in the future" is dead, and to an extent they are right (but their conclusion is still incorrect). Traditionally, it has been assumed (via Moore's law) that p...

Re: Positive News for Bitcoin Today

As much as I would like for this to be true, I don't think it is. Take a look at how recent blocks have been voting (re: classic/core), and you will see much less blocks voting for classic by the chinese miners then expected. Although it is also possible that the miners are not yet mining classic bl...

it is important to work on off-chain solutions as a backup to on-chain scaling. So many people miss that important point. I'm glad you made it so clear. The long term solution lies with both on, and off chain scaling solutions. We shouldn't only focus on one to the detriment of the other. Well my u...

Re: Time to sync a full node from scratch

This depends on if you plan on using a classic or a core node. If you are using a classic node then you might get DDoS'ed, causing it to take about 2-3 days or so to sync.

If I can download 5MB / second,
If you can avoid getting DDoS'ed then I would say within 12 hours.

Re: Why Bitcoin block space is like Starbucks coffee.

As a general rule, the only benefit to confirming a transaction would be the tx fee (maybe the sender and/or recipient has some kind of agreement with the miner that involves tx fees being paid separately, but the tx fee will likely be attached to the transaction) associated with the transaction. I...

Regarding your plan to expose theymos as a 'petty dictator who opposes free speech' I think that you and I both know nothing will come of this. AFAIK, there is no mechanism in place to remove someone as an "owner" of a subreddit. There is a mechanism in place to remove theymos as the head administra...

Re: Why Bitcoin block space is like Starbucks coffee.

The only negative externalities I can think of regarding mining an extra bitcoin transaction in a block are: In an ideal world, there will be more supply of block space then there is long term demand for block space. Blocks may sometimes be full (although having no block size limit could possibly b...

If you are in a situation similar to the one described in the OP then it would probably be a better idea to use a mutually trusted escrow agent who can hold the funds and ask for clarifying documentation/evidence in the event there is a dispute in a transaction. My understanding of a smart contract ...

Oh wow this would be risky. If you were to get on the wrong side of the market then you could easily have your entire account wiped out in minutes. Even if you are not on the wrong side, the noise on the exchange could cause huge losses that would be permanent when you get a margin call/forced liqui...

Anyone considering on bidding on this should do their own due diligence and should use escrow to ensure that they get what they pay for (or at least increase their chances of doing so). I think wired probably got duped, but that is just what the initial evidence points to.

If he is satoshi then there is no reason why he cannot sign a GPG message from satoshi's GPG key, or to sign a message from an address known to belong to satoshi.
