Start by explaining to them that digital currency is real currency and as bitkilo said majority of all currency use today is done digitally and while there are a lot of paper notes in circulation there's even more currency that has been created digitally and exists digitally.

Physical or digital is irrelevant when the result is the same. I can go to the store and buy a computer with cash. Or I can go to newegg and buy a computer with Bitcoin. They are both means to the same end.
