Beware - Bitmain is attacking Bitcoin again via their malicious mining software - Backdoor!

Antbleed is a backdoor introduced by Bitmain into the firmware of their bitcoin mining hardware Antminer.

The firmware checks-in with a central service randomly every 1 to 11 minutes. Each check-in transmits the Antminer serial number, MAC address and IP address. Bitmain can use this check-in data to cross check against customer sales and delivery records making it personally identifiable. The remote service can then return "false" which will stop the miner from mining.

So the backdoor was apparently in the code to allow people to be able to remotely connect to their miners, ok sounds normal so far.
Is this a common feature in mining equipment software and if so I am sure many people would either already be using it or have disabled it but if this is a feature specific to Bitmain then you would think they would be happy for people to know about it, let's face it you don't add a special feature to keep it a secret do you.

I will follow this article (with your help of updates, wink wink) but i do think that this particular article was a bit far fetched or quickly put together for me, I don't think I have ever read an article with the word "could" printed so many times.

Charging back antminer purchases is probably completely legal. Returning them should be at the sellers expense, and opportunity costs should be deducted as well. Given how mining works and hashrate increaes: if the seller is willing to pay you 50% of the cost of an unusable device to get it back... that would be a fair settlement:

There was no installation of "malware, viruses or backdoors". Try a chargeback if you feel like gambling with the courts, but I will caution anyone even thinking about doing this (certainly no Bitmain customer would, simply because they have the undisputed best hardware and have not done anything to hurt their customers) to sleep on it as such an action would constitute the crime of fraud in many jurisdictions.

If you have a concern with a product from any vendor, your first port of call should be their customer support department. Unless you attempt to resolve an issue in a recognised manner and instead go for the nuclear option, you may very well open yourself to a court case and criminal record.

It's just not worth the hassle. Speak to the vendor if you have an issue with a product you have purchased that you are not satisfied with.

You're conflating a backdoor with malware and viruses. The FTC says you can do a chargeback for malware but NOT for backdoors. Backdoors are actually pretty common, especially for admins/technicians to be able to get in. It is a security risk and this is why it's a big deal for Bitcoin. But it doesn't make it bad or an acceptable chargeback method for the FTC. Trying to perform a chargeback for this would likely be declined as there is nothing malicious [according to Bitmain] about the backdoor, nor any malware or viruses.

I don't think calling the setup in Bitmain's open source firmware a Backdoor is accurate either.
It didn't allow Bitmain to update or control a users system to do anything at all other than to stop mining, and even that could be bypassed by the user easily.

In short, it wasn't a virus, malware, or a backdoor. It was just some poorly designed firmware that has been open source since day one, so buyers had the ability to know exactly what they were getting.
