How to Run Bitcoin as a Tor Hidden Service on Ubuntu

Why should you run a Bitcoin hidden service on your node?

* It increases the privacy of other Bitcoin users who are anonymizing their actions via Tor. Specifically, it is a countermeasure to many of the “network observer” attacks listed on the Open Bitcoin Privacy Project’s threat model.
* It makes your own node more robust against Sybil attacks and network partitions.
* It doesn’t require much more computational resources to run, just the one-time setup cost of configuring your machine.

Very informative post. Thanks for sharing. In my opinion though, this isn't really needed unless controlling a huge number of btc

I know. Like I said it isn't worth the effort if you only have a small amount. But definitely useful for businesses that use btc

Interesting, I wish Ubuntu would work on my PC...
And here I thought it would work on any. What are you running on your PC if it cant even run Ubuntu??

Ubuntu Desktop Edition
700 MHz processor (about Intel Celeron or better)
512 MiB RAM (system memory)
5 GB of hard-drive space (or USB stick, memory card or external drive but see LiveCD for an alternative approach)
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a CD/DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media
Internet access is helpful

This was something new for me. Big thanks for that.

Best Practice:
https://riseup.net/en/security/network- ... -practices

From the TOR project:
https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-hid ... ce.html.en

If you have a network with a hidden service, it should be isolated and not communicate with other machines on a local net. Having physical access to a service on a machine behind a Checkpoint and a decent router is a good idea.

Larger or more visible services may want to consider a managed honeypot.

For clients, connect to a different network and run TAILS. Alternatively, just use TOR over VPN for general browsing. A live distro with a clean browser and less information to fingerprint you with is the best way to go for those who want to achieve a high level of privacy and security all the time by default.

You can get VPN access with btc of course (eg. Mullvad and others).

I would really like to be able to run it from Tails. (Electrum I can just run from source without problems, but it doesn't work for the bitcoin.com wallet).
