Why is it closing? Should we use the subreddit (r/btc) as an alternative forum, or is there something else coming?

Very glad to read that the forum is not closing. The Bitcoin.com Forum is my home away from home.

Whether you're just starting to learn more about bitcoin or it's hobby or you're coding or you're an enthusiast or a professional there's tons of useful information on this forum and it's a great place to ask questions and get helpful answers.

Why is there still a red banner on top saying the forum is closing? This is rather confusing.

I hope it's just a fascinating headline for traders to be more active in the forum. It has long been a useful and valuable resource. I would not like it to cease to exist. And judging by the number of responses, it is also important for many other users.

From what I've been reading apparently there are some who believe that places like reddit, twitter and read.cash are all we need and that forums are 'ancient.'

Some of the Bitcoin[.]com team itself didn't even know that the Forum existed (this is not private information, they've posted their thoughts in public throughout the last week or so).

Places like reddit, twitter and even read.cash (although I will say that read.cash is an alright place and it seems to be useful) all practice censorship (or are willing to). In addition, some smaller sites like read.cash could disappear (e.g., forced to shutdown, money dries up, or just the threat of government sanctions, or maybe if they get overwhelmed with topics they don't like).

Reddit has been censoring for years. In 2014 / 2015 Voat.co was created (for the most part a Reddit clone) in response to censorship at reddit.

I tried out Voat.co in 2018 and immediately was attacked for discussing bitcoin. Turns out that Voat.co also practices censorship. They won't ban accounts (unless something has changed nowadays) but what they will do is send out hit squads (literally, this is discussed at the site) to downvote your posts/comments (all of it, not just the post they didn't approve of) so that you're no longer permitted to post. The admins and mods (or whatever they're called at Voat) were calling me a "pajeet" (apparently it's some derogatory term used to describe people in India who defecate (poop) in public) and other names because I wanted to discuss bitcoin. The said I was Indian or maybe I was a Bangladeshi or something even though I'm a white guy posting from the US. They also didn't like my username (nandibear), they said it sounds like an Indian name.

Here's my profile if anyone wants to check: https://voat.co/user/nandibear

Throughout the years I've tried others sites (e.g., Gab.com) and even what might be called the forerunner of Read.cash: Honest.cash

I was excited about Honest.cash and made several posts. That is until the founder (or co-founder as he likes to describe himself) started expressing his support of (1) censorship and (2) protecting people from words and ideas (this was in mid-2019).

Here's my reply to him if anyone wants to check: https://honest.cash/v2/nandibear/re-re-can-free-speech-ever-harm-democracy-and-human-rights-5943

Honest.cash in no longer being developed (and the site was broken for several months) and evidently the site is for sale as they are looking for a buyer. Which reminds me (a little at least) of Steemit being bought by Justin Sun (or the 'Tron Foundation') earlier this year (Feb. 2020). Sun thinks that dissent and opinion are criminal as he believes it's damaging his company (Steemit, Inc). I haven't posted for 5 months now. There's a couple of new forks (Hive.io and coming soon, apparently on July 4th, Blurt).

Wrote a little about it at: https://nandibear.com/hive-and-blurt-forks-of-the-steem-blockchain

What are the reasons for the Bitcoin[.]com Forum closing?

The decision to do so came shortly after two Bitcoin[.]com employees were caught deleting topics and posts in regard to concerns about withdraws from games.Bitcoin[.]com

Censorship, banning and blacklisting at Read.Cash (and this isn't the first instance) -

Read.cash Founder Threatens Ban & Permanent Fund Blacklist of 100 Users by Midnight London Time Tonight
CoinSpice.io
by C. Edward Kelso
July 29th, 2020

Excerpt:

“So, do you all realize that we’ll have to ban like 100 people today for rules violation?…,” the founder of Read.cash threatened over a recent meme competition started by Bitcoin Cash (BCH) developer Shammah Chancellor. Memes rolled-in, mostly making fun of prominent community members for the chance to win BCH and clout. Users have until “today midnight London time today to delete every meme that does a personal attack,” the popular blogging site warned.

Read.cash Founder Threatens Ban of 100 Users

Asked for comment from CoinSpice, Chancellor quipped, “Fuck read.cash, I’m making a clone with hookers and blow. I have 25K + profit sharing for a working clone. Talk to me for product specs,” and pointed to his meme contest continuing on Reddit. Chancellor also updated his Read.cash competition post, insisting, “There is [now] an additional 2 BCH being added to the pool” for related prizes.

What should you do when someone writes things which you don't like or offends you (or others)?

Answer:

Ignore it. Develop thicker skin, don't be a snowflake.

Or if the topic is very important to you, and worth your time, then maybe write out your thoughts (try to be objective and avoid using any snark) and post/publish it. Then let it go and move on.

hey Bloomie,

For a few (or maybe several) days now your forum and entire site, Bitco.in/forum and Bitco.in, are no longer up. Shows up as a parked domain with ads from sedoparking.com

Have you permanently closed down your forum?

Looks like you guys paid the domain registration last night. I noticed your forum and site went back online.

Checked at namesilo.com where bitco.in is registered and saw that the domain expired on May 6, 2021 and was renewed yesterday, May 12, 2021, (good now thru May 6, 2022).

Good to see your forum back online!
