Great password generating site

Wed Nov 25, 2015 10:31 am

I use this site for generating passwords -- https://www.grc.com/passwords.html. I've found it very helpful. It can't be be run offline, which is a little disturbing but otherwise seems to be quite good at generating high quality random material in a pretty secure environment.

I would never trust a password generation website.

What you could do, is the following (a bit technical):
[*]Generate your own random bytes of whatever length you want (say length 15)
[*]Use an online generator to randomly generate another 15 bytes
[*]Combine these random bytes with XOR logic (exclusive or).
[*]Convert the byte array to a list of numbers using MOD (modulo) logic, based on the characters that you want in your password
[*]Convert each of those numbers to the character in your valid character list

Then, including an external source introduces no risk and improves the randomness of the final byte string.

Hmm. . Yes that would work.

It would be nice if there was a website like bitaddress that would generate passwords in a file you could save offline.

Even though I trust the man behind Gibson Research (listen to the security now podcast it's great!) I would personally not ever suggest that you use a password generator. Especially not a password generator that is connected to the internet. If you are bad at remembering or creating good passwords then a password manager and generator might be more secure as long as you are sure that it isn't malicious.

Lastpass has a very good system for generating great passwords locally.

i fully agree with this. personally i would never store my passwords on my pc or genereate them with such a generator.

i guess when you use keypassX and you have a screenlogger/keylogger - you are fucked? :?

Maybe I'm doing something silly, but I usually just take a bunch of random characters and use a PGP program to encrypt it. Then just take a portion of the encrypted output randomly from somewhere in the PGP block and add in a some special characters if possible.
