Using Bitcoin to visit Antarctica

Thu Mar 22, 2018 2:13 am

I was looking into taking a trip to Antarctica and paying directly with Bitcoin (BCH or BTC).

So far I've found a company called Aventuras Patagonicas which accepts payment in Bitcoin and they have two trips available:

https://patagonicas.com/expeditions/antarctica/
Image https://patagonicas.com/expeditions/ant ... xpedition/

https://patagonicas.com/expeditions/ant ... xpedition/

The prices ($47,600 and $65,000) seem exceptionally expensive.

Has anyone reading here ever visited Antarctica?

I really didn't have a good idea of the size of Antarctica until just now when I saw this image (on the NASA.gov website) which overlays the United States:

I may (I'm not 100% certain) have found another company which accepts Bitcoin for trips to Antarctica. A company called White Desert Antarctica:

Emperors & South Pole - http://www.white-desert.com/adventures/ ... outh-pole/

Ice & Mountains - http://www.white-desert.com/adventures/ ... mountains/

Greatest Day - http://www.white-desert.com/adventures/greatest-day/

All of the prices are listed as $84,000

If I'm able to ascertain whether or not they really and truly accept Bitcoin I'll update the info here in a new post.

I can't even imagine how cold it can be there. It's still nobody's, isn't it? I remember it belonging to the whole world earlier.

Why on earth would you want to sell your Bitcoin and go to a place like Antarctica? It is foolish to sell your Bitcoin. The experts are predicting that Bitcoin value will increase in the upcoming time. Review your decision. Please.

Hi Jomorey,

I believe that a number of countries have claims (not sure how official these claims are) to areas of Antarctica.

I'm not sure if anyone really lives there either but there are some town-like places such as McMurdo Base and I believe that some people spend a lot of time there. Some for research, others for service jobs (service workers are needed everywhere).

Hi Geleas,

Thanks, I understand the point that you're making. However, for me Bitcoin (whether you believe that is Bitcoin Cash BCH or Bitcoin Core BTC) is peer to peer electronic cash. I like spending it.

According to Wikipedia these are countries which have territorial claims in Antarctica:

This is a real picture of a flight to Antarctica. I'm not implying that all such flights look like this, but if one like this would accept Bitcoin (BCH or BTC) it would work for me:

I'm going to need somewhere to eat at while I'm in Antarctica. I'm haven't found much online. I did find this place called Gallagher's Pub at McMurdo Station. I hope they have have food and not just beer (I don't drink anyway).

I think I've found a better place to get a meal in Antarctica. I'm not sure if they accept Bitcoin (BCH or BTC) as payment though.

The dining hall at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station (winter temperatures hover around -72 degrees Fahrenheit):

Looks like an other place to maybe get some food in Antarctica. Not sure yet if paying with Bitcoin will be possible.

I hope it's not just beer and drinks, they guy with the chef-looking hat seems to indicated that there's food around.

Here's an unexpected danger (which I just learned of today) of traveling to Antarctica:

volcanoes

No wonder the ice is melting.

I can use Bitcoin (BCH pr BTC) to pay for most of the trip. I guess I need to think more about of what type of safety gear I can buy with bitcoin (BCH or BTC).

A 2017 study claimed to have found 138 volcanoes, of which 91 were previously unknown.

Please see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_volcanoes_in_Antarctica

Please also see: theguardian.com/world/2017/aug/12/scientists-discover-91-volcanos-antarctica

Volcanic eruptions may not reach the surface but could melt the ice from beneath and drastically destabilise it

Apparently this is another cafeteria at McMurdo Station.

Not sure if this cafeteria is open to the public. Looks nice and so does the food. That being said all (or at least most) of the food is expired. It takes a long time to ship food to Antarctica and not much grows there (at least nowadays). Food cannot be wasted.

Food lasts much longer as it's all frozen aside from what's kept in refrigerators which, I've learned, are heated (rather than cooled) to keep food from freezing.

Still haven't found anywhere (aside from paying for the trip itself) which accepts Bitcoin.

Fascinating thread! Never knew there were volcanoes in Antarctica. Not that I knew much about it at all lol. But it sounds like a very interesting destination.
