I like big blocks

Wed Jan 20, 2016 7:11 pm

I've been vocal in my support of increasing the block size for months now:

While I think the network can easily handle blocks much larger than 2MB, there seems to be very widespread support for 2MB and Bitcoin Classic at the moment.
It's great to see so many other companies like Blockchain, Coinbase, Xapo, Bitstamp, and so many others, come out in favor of this.

This wide spread support I think means we are likely going to see it happen, and it will be for the good of everyone.

More users, more transactions, and more decentralization all in one.

I'm in favour of big blocks for a variety of reasons (which have grown over the last 6 months 'debates').

I'm not going to highlight all the reasons, but this one in particular I will;

1mb blocks, or relying on LN (which is still vaporware) or Sidechains, or a 3rd party business, and the steady increase in fees to process transactions on the network and the time delay;

Because of these reasons its simply not suitable for a bank to integrate bitcoin onto their platform.

And before people go "banks!? what?! burn them all!". I have a similar attitude (not that excessive though), but not all banks are the same.

Having a bank integrate bitcoin for customers would create an amazing bridge from fiat to crypto (as you know), with a larger block size, transactions on chain, and lower fees, this becomes possible (again).

Thanks to Classic I can recommend again.

I also think LN is potentially amazing and Sidechains, but both can exist with larger block sizes (when they are ready).

Classic is the vision I 'brought' into years ago, its the one I've worked hard to promote, I would not continue to promote bitcoin as a settlement layer, but as a peer2peer cash, for world wide use (not just the wealthy than can afford it), most definitely.

So many of us early adopters, including myself, feel this way.

What you (we) really want is an increase in max tx rate, and even that isn't necessary immediately.
Segwit gives that almost as soon as a rushed, non-consensual hard fork, so why would you attempt that?

I understand that companies would like to have a clear increase in tx rate to plan for investments, but you don't get that even with your favorite 2MB hard fork.

It should seem clear that both bigger blocks, and SegWit are good ways to increase the tx throughput.
It's too bad the Core side are blocking bigger blocks, while the bigger block side are happy to get SegWit as well.
