We are now a little more than a month from the 2nd annual Anarchapulco conference! As such, people have begun to make their travel arrangements and have many questions… which we thought we’d answer here.
FLIGHTS & BUSES
To begin, there are many different ways to get here. There are direct flights from Houston, on United, to Acapulco and, as well, there are numerous charter carriers (which you won’t see listed on sites like Expedia) that fly direct to Acapulco including Air Transat and Sunwing airlines which have direct flights from Montreal and Toronto.
Aside from those, most people will be flying into Mexico City before either taking a flight to Acapulco (a 35 minute flight) or driving or taking a bus (approximately 4-5 hours).
If you choose to take a bus, the cost is approximately $30 USD and there are countless bus lines that leave approximately every 15 minutes from Mexico City. We recommend paying a little extra for “VIP” buses which are often reclining lazyboy chairs and eminently comfortable with your own entertainment units and drinks and food served on board.
If you do decide to take a bus from Mexico City, Pete Eyre of Cop Block and Amanda Johnson of the Daily Decrypt filmed everything you need to know about taking the bus to Acapulco on their recent trip
here.

When checking flights, check for flights to Mexico City as well as Acapulco. Sometimes booking to Acapulco is cheaper than just going to Mexico City. And sometimes it is cheaper to book to Mexico City and take the bus from there (which, when taking in airport wait times, is only usually an extra 1-2 hours of travel time).
Some of the amazing deals we have seen this week is a round-trip ticket from Vancouver, Canada to Acapulco, via Mexico City, for $500 USD! We’ve also seen great deals from New York and Los Angeles for $500 or less, roundtrip.
Another option is flying to San Diego, where they have a new airport terminal connector to the Tijuana airport where you can take a direct flight to Acapulco on Volaris.
HOTELS
The conference will be held at the
Grand Hotel and we suggest you stay there as much of the evening activities center around the pool and bar areas there.
The Mexican peso has been crashing lately and so almost everything in Acapulco is incredibly cheap, including hotels.
The standard rate at the Grand Hotel is about $65 USD/night, which is an excellent deal for a very nice hotel. However, we’ve seen that if you book your flight through Expedia they are currently offering massive discount off hotels, including the Grand Hotel.
One person managed to book the hotel on Expedia for $30/night! And another got a rate of $45/night!
Combine that with the cost of an average taco meal and a beer being about $3 and it is nearly free to stay here.
SAFETY
Dozens of people from last year’s conference just stayed here because they loved it so much, and many more went back to where they are from, packed up, and moved here. They all laugh, as we do, when we hear about safety concerns.
Acapulco, in general, in the tourist areas, for a tourist, is one of the safest places on Earth!
We received two emails in the last week that made us laugh. One was from a person in Chicago who said their wife was worried about Mexico being dangerous. We sent them this article, “CHICAGO HAS SEEN 110 PEOPLE SHOT, 17 KILLED IN FIRST 10 DAYS OF NEW YEAR”, and told them that we are worried about them staying in Chicago and hope they can get out alive to safety in Mexico!
Another was from a group of people in Germany who are planning a large pilgrimage that was sidetracked by some of their wives/girlfriends, who said that they heard Acapulco was dangerous. We sent them this article, “THERE ARE 653 COLOGNE VICTIMS OF THE MUSLIM RAPE MOB”, which says that 653 people were either raped or robbed in one evening alone in just one city in Germany and advised them to get to Acapulco as soon as possible for their own safety!
The truth is that the only real danger in Acapulco for tourists or foreigners is of having too much fun. If you are planning to come to Acapulco, join the private
Anarchapulco Facebook group to speak with dozens of anarcho-expats who have moved here who can not only tell you how great it is, but many will go out of their way to help you find whatever you need and answer any questions you have.
OTHER DETAILS
While never reported in the mainstream media, more Mexicans are leaving the US and moving back to Mexico than are going to the US due to safety concerns and a poor economy. And a serious concern of many Mexicans is the amount of Americans who are illegally living in Mexico… it’s actually become epidemic, with an estimated 1 million Americans living in Mexico, most as illegal aliens.
For this reason, when you enter into Mexico, make sure to tell them you have a return flight home (even if you don’t) and it is best just to say you are coming for vacation (rather than saying you are coming to an anarchist conference)! Last year one person was turned away when he said he was going to an anarchist conference… the main reason being that many Mexicans think anarchists are anarcho-communists, which there are many of in Mexico, who often riot or blow things up.
Not to worry though, here in Acapulco, Anarchapulco is well known and people here understand that we are the “good” type of anarchists… we are one of the biggest conventions in Acapulco and attendees are highly sought after as they often are great tippers (anarcho-capitalists, after all, who appreciate good service) and spend a lot of money. The hotel we hosted Anarchapulco at last year (which we outgrew this year) said we were the best conference they had ever hosted… especially after some ancaps rewired and fixed the entire hotel’s slow and dysfunctional wifi system for free.
REGISTER NOW!
With a little more than a month left until what will be the libertarian conference of the year, people have begun registering at a rapid rate. Today we had our most registrations of any day yet.
If things continue at the current rate we will sell-out the event, so if you intend to come we suggest you register as soon as you can at
Anarchapulco.com.
We’ll look forward to seeing you all down here in paradise soon!
