I like the idea to promote full nodes on the main download page. As it is now, I do not think it is clear to new users what a full node is, or why they should want one. As a new user, if I were to visit the download page, I would click on the desktop link and never know about full nodes.
I propose to change the wording. But I do use many more words, which is a personal preferences I guess. What about :
Bitcoin is a currency that is supported by the computers of those people who choose to run [bitcoin classic] (or [compatible]) software on their laptop, desktop computer or server. This software has a copy of the entire block chain, which is a full history of all transactions ever performed with bitcoin. This is called a full installation, or a full node.
While it is not necessary to run a full node to use bitcoin, doing so will build the strength of the network as a whole and ensures that you are not dependent on any third party services to use bitcoin securely and reliably.
A full installation requires about 80 GB of hard disk space to store the block chain, and it may take several days to synchronize all transactions. We recommend to keep bitcoin classic running in the background whenever your computer is on, in order to ensure it is always aware of the latest transactions and so that your computer can strengthen the network by sharing transactions it was informed about with other computers just like it elsewhere on the Internet.
You don't need to keep a full node running 24/7 to receive transactions: other full nodes in the network will store all transactions, including the ones that fund your addresses, even if your computer is switched off. As soon as your full node reconnects to the Internet, it will download any transactions it missed while offline and it will inform you to any transactions that occurred.
In addition to running a full node, you can install as many other wallets as you like. You should be aware that there is no one official bitcoin wallet.
Click [here to download bitcoin classic] or a full node [alternative].
Also, please feel free to download any of the other wallets for [mobile] devices, [desktop] computers, [hardware] devices or [bank] services.
Thank you for your support.
Roger, please feel free to use this text, or change it any way you like.
