Trying some new Wallets - Bread Wallet: What say you?

Tue Nov 17, 2015 1:22 am

Hey Bitcoiners. Gonna do some talks on Bitcoin Wallets, looking for opinions.

First will be Bread Wallet. What's your opinion? Looking for Pros and Cons. What you like about it, What you don't and what would you change.

Link to BreadWallet http://breadwallet.com/

Also don't hesitate to let me know your favorite wallet(s). I am mainly thinking Mobile Device, but PC or whatever is fine.

Thanks!!

i never used bread wallet but it has a good reputation and a clean design.

personally i use Copay (PC) and Mycelium (Phone) at the moment.

i like it when i can switch between "bits" and "bitcoin".
it also has to have a fast start - Copay is pretty good and easy to use.

Both are SPV wallets right? Or is CoPay PC a full node???

Copay is a SPV yes. quick installation and then "go".

i guess Mycelium is spv too. at least for the mobile phone.

Hi ronnieb,

Sure, Wallet32 comes from Bonsai Software Inc.
It is a hierarchical deterministic wallet that uses BIP-0032, i hope with updates.
Could have been one of the first HD wallets but not sure.

Some great features are,
* It allows you to use a new receiving address for every transaction.
* Show all receiving and change address in your wallet on one page with amounts for each visible.
* You can create separate accounts in the one wallet.
* Able to sweep private keys (cold storage) by QR code or private key.

Downside for a wallet.
* No 2fa available.
* Unable to sign addresses.
* Can take a long time to scan the blockchain if you haven't opened the app in awhile but I guess that to be expected.

Overall it was a good wallet when I was using it a lot and I loved it at the time.

I will update later with some info on green address for you.
Hope this helps

Re: Trying some new Wallets - Bread Wallet: What say you?

Breadwallet is my primary hot wallet - I've been using it for about a year or so now.

I love its simplicity and design, and trust its security (at least for a hot wallet). I've used it often and overall love it.

Three (somewhat minor) criticisms:

1) The first isn't really a criticism of Breadwallet, but iOS, which it runs on. In iOS you can't set the default Bitcoin wallet - it is done by some magical process behind the scenes. For a long time Breadwallet was the default, but lately it has been defaulting to my circle or coinbase or mycelium apps. I can't figure out a way to make Breadwallet the default without deleting all my other wallet apps. This is a pain when I want to pay with Bitcoin for something on another app or in the browser on my phone.

2) I did lose some funds one time using Breadwallet. I was paying a small invoice (about $2 worth of bitcoins), and I sent the payment when Breadwallet was still syncing. It gave a message that the payment was not sent and that I would have to send it again. So I waited until the wallet was synced, and sent again. However, both ended up being sent! I kept meaning to contact the vendor and Breadwallet, but never got around to it since it was such a small amount. But it did make me more careful about sending funds before syncing was completed.

3) The developer of Breadwallet insists on using bits as the only denominator in the app. I probably would use bits as well, but I don't like not having an option to change it, since sometimes I'll get invoices in bitcoins and then have to mentally make sure the # of bits is the same.

Aside from these minor issues (well, the lost funds would have been major if I sent more money), I highly recommend Breadwallet.

Update from my last post:
GreenAddress wallet.

As i said this wallet used to be great on mobile but has been getting very slow even to the point where my app won't open anymore.

I couldn't get into my wallet so just snapped this from Bitcoin Wiki:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/GreenAddress
It should have any info your looking for.

Sorry it took me a few days to update.

Copay for the win.

It's fast and elegant. Easy to use.

Three types of tx fees.
Option to send all funds. No bit-dust hell.
Multi-Sig.
Easy and elegant way to maintain multiple wallets.
Deterministic Wallets.
Password to open or transfer. Use fingerprint.

I tried Green-something wallet but it was difficult and crashed multiple times. Breadwallet seemed nice but Copay looks and works much better.
Tried the Blockchain app but it was slow and not straight-forward.

Can't remember all the ones but Copay is the only one I'm using (for my iPhone). There's a version for Desktop too which I didn't test as much. For Desktop/Android you have to take extra care since you don't know if you get virus/malware and steal your coins.

Awesome!! Thanks for the post. Plus CoPay works on Windows phone... not sure how many other wallets work on windows.

Question. I was just talking with a friend who wanted to upload a private key (using Coinbase app) and the option was removed. Can you "importprivkey" with CoPay?

There is three import ways:
-Wallet Seed; You type the seed word (usually 12 words)
-File/Text backup; I think that's the one you're looking for.
-Hardware wallet (Trezor)
