Head first mining by Gavin Andresen Pull Request #152 effectively lowers block propagation from ~10sec to 150ms.

Really cool potential to removing the slow block propagation argument out of the core protocol scaling debate.

after 150 ms you can begin mining an empty block

after 10-30s you can mine a non empty block

tell me, whats the benefit, again?

The point is that a miner can start work on the next block very quickly without downloading everything. This was the major concern of miners especially in low bandwidth countries like China.

If they had to download 2 to 8 meg before starting a new block they are at a disadvantage. It also stops the need for the centralised network used by miners currently for block propagation between pools.

This means we can have automatic block size scaling based on a exponential moving average on number of transactions per block without running into arguments relating to block propagation time of larger blocks. We can put this issue behind us. I would like to see this implemented yesterday.

The Idea is fantastic but unfortunately everything needs lab time
