How to run a Bitcoin node on Synology Disk Station in just 3 steps

Mon Feb 15, 2016 3:33 am

Jan 16th, 2017 Update: A Bitcoin Unlimited version for Docker is now available here.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the most recent version of Synology Disk Station manager DSM 5.2 they have added support for Docker.
This makes it super easy for anyone with a Synology Disk Station to run a bitcoin full node.

Step 1.
Install the Docker package:

Step 2.
Once Docker has installed, open it, and search the registry for "bitcoinclassic"
Highlight the one you want, and click "Download"
Image

Step 3. Once the image has downloaded, select it, and then choose "Launch With Wizard"

Follow the wizard steps:

That's it! Everything should be up and running!

The only other things you may want to check are:
1. Make sure your router is forwarding port 8333 to your Synology Disk Station
2. Check and see if your node is reachable from the outside internet. There is a great tool for checking here.

Things I didn't figure out how to do yet:
1. I don't know how to check the node status locally from the DSM. (How many connections? How much of the blockchain has been downloaded and synced?)
2. I think if I reboot the machine, it may lose the entire copy of the blockchain and need to download it again. I think there is a way to map the blockchain files to an external folder.
I'll gladly update the tutorial above if people can provide additional information.

This seems like a super easy way for hundreds of thousands of Synology Disk Station owners to start running a full node!

Very, very nice. It's a crazy world, being able to run a global financial infrastructure on devices such as a NAS and a Raspberry Pi!

Great tutorial, I hope many more nodes will come online due to this being possible.

Make sure that you have port 8333 forwarded from your router to your Synology Disk station.
Then you should be able to see it from https://bitnodes.21.co/

I guess the closest thing I have to an "official" channel is this, but I just use it as a personal place to toss up occasional videos that I need hosted.

I'm not sure how that is relevant to this thread on the Synology Disk Station full nodes though.

I think this would just be to run a full node to help seed the network.
Are you wanting to run an actual wallet to send and receive transactions with it?

This thread brings back some memories. I will need to check if there is a BCH version available now.
