Options for Securing your Bitcoin wallet

Tue Apr 19, 2016 4:39 am

Here I want to discuss an overview of various methods to secure your bitcoin savings and the strengths and weaknesses of each approach for storing ones savings in Bitcoin. There is a time and place for using hot wallets, exchanges, tipping services, smartphone apps for daily spending but that is another conversation. We do not need to waste our time discussing extremely dangerous methods of storing ones savings like hot wallets and non-regulated exchanges.

Please offer any criticism and suggestions to build to this list:

Paper Wallets

Strengths:
Secure against Malware, viruses, trojans, and keyloggers. (As long as keys are generated with secure equipment)
Secure against online theft initiated by hackers or unscrupulous employees and owners of online wallets.
Once setup, easy to maintain and re-import.
Fairly secure against State and legal theft.
Practically Free to setup

Weaknesses:
Initially difficult to securely generate with an audited and clean computer
Online Utilities not as secure as offline generators
Insecure against physical theft

Need to emphasize that Ledger Nano S is the first hardware wallet to offer both bitcoin and ether compatibility. Very attractive price of $66.

Honestly speaking i didnt even heard about mycelium, when i read about this i searched it quickly and as mentioned here it does have cool features.
They were first advertised for sale in mid to late 2014 i think, mine was delivered in Jan 2015 if i remember right.
There was only 1000 of these made that i am aware of. They did create a bit of interest at the time and i am surprised that Mycelium hasn't made another batch yet.
Maybe with enough renewed interest in the future they will release a new version.

I didnt heard anything of it since i was on bitcoin world on march 2015 as far as i can remember thats why i didnt hear about such thing about mycelium. Hopefully they could release new version on upcoming months or next year.
Yep sorry to say but they were all sold out by March 2015.

If you would really like to see a new version of these released why don't you start a thread here with a poll asking other members if they would like to see one released, if the "yes" votes were high enough for another presale I'm sure Mycelium would look at doing it, you could only try.

I prefer to save my btc in the hardware wallet or paper wallet
I think that it is safe enough. I suggest do not store you all bitcoin in online wallet. It's risky.

Would you ever recommend to store some BTC on physical coins? Or would that just be stupid?

Unless it's using 2factor or you generated your own private keys, I think it's pretty unsafe to store BTC as physical bitcoins in general. They can make great short term investments however :)

I always liked paper wallets. It's just too much of a hassle if I decided to use it.  But yea, it's good I think if you're planning on storing some bitcoins longterm.
I found that they were always difficult to make 100% secure when i was just starting out and was always paranoid that i may have leaked the private key somehow.
To solve that problem i got one of the Mycelium entropy devices, it is a usb devise that creates paper wallets safely on a printer that will never go online, it can even create 2 of 3 paper wallets and so simple to use.
One of the best investments i have made so far.

Entropy wallets? Never heard of that.

Also, concerning paperwallets, I would be paranoid too for sure. So do you think it's a bad idea to purchase paperwallets/bitcoin cards on the internet?

Yea. I agree. They look cool, though. So I'm probaby gonna get some in the future just for the sake of the coolness of those items.

Maybe try this; https://bitcoinpaperwallet.com/

I won't recommend it though, I haven't used it personally.

Physical Bitcoins could be an option too.

Nowadays there are many DIY Physical Bitcoins manuafactures: generate your own Public/Private Keys put the private key under a hologram and you are set. Also Kialara makes some really good looking coins which are like artworks. http://kialara.com.

Some manufactures provide loaded physical bitcoins so be careful which ones you trust with private keys.

Casascius are the most well known coins, Denarium, BTCC Mint and many others all offer different coins of different value.

Consider that many physical bitcoins also appreciate in value because they are limited edition, rare items.

The paper wallet is good options too
It's very safe to store your bitcoin and you can try the hardwallet wallet like trezor, keepkey, etc.
I think it is also very safe to use
I knew it is very safe to use, the paper wallet is the best option if do you have a lot of bitcoin
if do you want to store your bitcoin for the longterm.

any one to use keep key here?
this is a bitcoin wallet that protects your bitcoin from hackers
I haven't used one yet but it's too of my list for a hardware wallet, they just look so cool with a nice sleek design.

I was checking them out on amazon and came across this, they offer what looks like a type of warranty is called a 1-year Photo and Data Recovery Plan
If your device stops working, the Rescue data recovery plan will recover the data from the failed device and return it to you on a new piece of external storage media.
Covers new removeable flash memory device of any brand when purchased within 30 days (receipt must be retained for purchases not on the same transaction).
Yeah i don't think I would feel comfortable sending my hardware wallet off to some 3rd party company for them to recover my data, if they don't you get your $3.95 back, lol
This is probably for phone sales and got mixed in.

I've had a nightmare with Trezor and discovered that I'm not the only one. Earlier in November I updated my Trezor and it created a new wallet with new set of seed words. In the process, my original accounts and Bitcoins have been erased and my Trezor doesn't recognize recovery seed of the original wallet. I'm so pissed off, if you have not updated your Trezor firmware yet, don't do it, because you could loose all your coins. I should've stuck to my cold storage paper wallet.

If you have the seed of your old wallet, you should be able to open up a new wallet with say, Electrum, or another provider, and enter in that seed, it should find your wallet so you can use it again.

The electrum wallet is a good choice to use it
you can control your bitcoin, I think it safe than other wallet like online wallet.
